Strike.........

The staff at the 
BBC Television
were planning a strike.
Quite right too.......
But now it's been called off.......
Why?
Well it would have stopped the broadcast of with the
Conservative Party Conference.
Exactly why the strike should go ahead......
These  Ivory Towered Tories,
need to be off the air !
It's the only way,
they will notice something is wrong.

This comment completely misses the point. The new Labour leader Ed Miliband saw that the planned strike was scheduled for PARTY political reasons, which is completely illogical and unacceptable. He urged the BBC staff to think again about that, and they quite correctly called the strike off. Their argument is not with the Conservative party, who have only been in coalition control since May - it is with the Board of Governors at the BBC who want to change the rules on pensions. As for "Ivory Towers" - that's a very 1930's view of what was an upper class ruling Conservative party, which was the reason for the formation of the Labour party, to represent "the workers". Today it's all very different. Just because a politician has had the benefit of a good education does not make him incapable of leading the country in a fair, logical and non-discriminatory way. Rather the opposite, I would have thought. Do you think Tony Blair lived in an "Ivory Tower" ? He went to a good public school, and was the most successful Labour leader in the party's history. No political leader should be denied the opportunity to address the country on the whim of a few hundred employees, particularly at such a crucial time in the country's (and the world's)financial crisis. I do understand what the unions are talking about, I was on the staff of the BBC for 12 years and currently draw a BBC pension.

Further to my comment - it seems that "the BBC management have improved their offer to the staff, enabling them to call of the strike". When you take that statement and put it from spin to reality, it should read "having been advised by Ed Miliband that their action was unjustifiable, the BBC staff have decided to accept the offer (which was already on the table from the BBC management), and claim that as the reason for calling off the strike". Yeh, right.
