That red line (Irish border backstop) is all about European unity. In the EU they know if they give the UK an inch, the Russians will want a mile.
The deal offered is actually the Canada plus plus deal BoJo & Co wanted 18 mths ago and which the EU indicted it would never agree to, but Ireland got then to relent so to keep the peace treaty alive in NI (and by extension English manufacturing alive).
But BoJo & Co wants any deal that breaks EU unity...they're hoping the Poles or Germans will break ranks. Hence the deal.
So the Tories will go to Brussels dreaming of Waterloo, dreaming that just like last time the Germans will save the day and the UK will prevail over Napoleon's descendants, the EU. But neither will break ranks....they have Russians on their minds.
