On 5 November 1605, Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King's escape from assassination by lighting bonfires, records alleging to be from the time stated they should light bonfires provided that "this testimony of joy be carefully done without any danger or disorder". In fact, an Act of Parliament designated each 5 November as a day of thanksgiving for "the joyful day of deliverance", and remained in force until 1859.
These celebrations have continued and each year on November 5th we set off fireworks and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire ..
Knowing what we know today .. the man was a hero who risked his life to free us. Of course, that is if the story is genuine and not a made-up fable.
