They know they did you wrong because they did not identify what you specifically did to violate their terms of service. Personally, I would make a written request for that information. Ask them how they determined you violated TOS.
They want the right to use people's personal information as they please, though if anything dangerous happens, the fault won't be with them. It will be blamed on the European law. WTF is happening to Google?

To answer your question, Google was originally created for military & government use. Someone really smart figured they can mine data if the public is allowed to use it.
I have been told that the CEOs running Google, Facebook, Ancestry DNA, and 23andMe are related to each other. Look at all the data they can mine!
