quiet, ideally Americans retire after 40 years of work. Law enforcement and military personnel can retire after 20 years due to the nature of the work. I think law enforcement does have a mandatory retirement age. I know some Christian denominations have a mandatory retirement age for ministers and missionaries as well.

Now, Americans who will rely on social security benefits reach full retirement age at 72. Sadly, many of these people still work because the checks are so small. The amount is based on how much the person put into the system. That is a good reason for workers not to leave off tip income and such on their income tax returns. They are gambling - if social security still exists when they retire they have cheated themselves. In other words, they want to avoid paying the tax man today but by doing so they have cheated themselves tomorrow.
