To cut a long story short. He ended up in a legal fight with them.
But during this fight. He discovered his only right.
He could change his name and drop the name Prince. And then he could release and perform his new music. As a symbol.
He also performed with slave written on his left cheek. To emphasize his point.
What he should have done is turn the other cheek.

And he destroyed it himself.

Artists do not own the recording masters. This means they make no money when a record label decides to create a “Best of So and So” album or a “So and So’s Greatest Hits” album. Pay closer attention. Albums like this always come out after the person is terminated, uh, I meant passes away. The artist has no legal rights. The recording company can give away the artists’ work if it wanted.
To make matters worse, artists pay when albums are given away. Artists pay for recording time, studio time, rights to use a song or piece of music they didn’t write, advertising, promotion, music video production, even costs associated with touring.
The music company lends money to the artist to pay for this. The borrower is slave to the lender.

4) Endorsements and other side hustles
