But unfortunately the Australian government attached a difficult condition to this offer.
The condition was that.... In taking the money, Virgin Australia had to move its Australian Headquarters. And from the state of Queensland. In the North.
To South....
To Western Sydney. In the State of New South Wales.
Branson knows this would be a huge upheaval for his Queensland based workers.
And a big change.
I get that.
Plus Queenslanders and Branson ...probably know. That Western Syney is the poor part of Sydney.
That's starting to change.
But I can imagine movin to Western Sydney isn't very attractive to Queenslanders.
And also Queensland is like the Florida of the U.S.
Actually alot of it is either Sub Tropical.
Or Tropical.
But you know...in my veiw Branson, I agree... was a fool not to take this huge lifeline Australia offered.
He really should have forced his workers and those workers willing to make the change.... To do so.
And you know...It's not everyday a government offers you $200 million to save your company.
And here's the other unpleasant fact. It was the Queensland State government who were offering the $200 million. Tasked with issuing the government money.
Are they gonna offer $200 million to a huge company ...to save it?
When it's going to completely re-locate to another State. How does that help Queensland. And Queenslanders?
Well the latest is. The $200 million offer has now been withdrawn. Branson won't move the HQ.
So Virgin Australia is now going into voluntary administration from today.
This is insane.
Because now, all those Queenslander people lose their jobs anyway.
I thought he owned Virgin Australia. He works out he only owns 10 per cent of it.
So I guess he's really been more of figurehead who only comes out during the good times.
Probably bad for his brand to show his face now. I don't think he's ever done the hard yards for this airline - he has people doing it for him.
I read this morning that he wants to mortgage his private Island to save Virgin.
I realised he was all froth and bubbles in 1997. In 1997 he got out of his car to enter Westminster Abbey for Princess Diana's funeral. He paused for a while to wave at people outside the church.
He was grinning like a Cheshire cat as he waved and was lapping it up. I thought to myself at the time, 'mate these people aren't here for you, you egoistical dickhead, they're here for Diana and are mourning her.'
That behaviour showed me he was so out of touch even back then.
I can understand why you were a bit put off ny Richard Branson's greeting the public outside the Church at Lady Diana's funeral.
But in reality as far as billionaires go. He's one of the good ones.
He probably greeted the public. Because he loves the public. And is an extravert. To the point he loves pranking the public. And all sorts of fun and games.
It always surprises me that he has done so well. And manifested so much money.
Because he's not a natural businessman.
For a start he's dyslexic too.
And when he was in one of his first business meetings he admitted he didn't even know the difference between net and gross.
His accountant had to explain it.
His wife is the one that's good at finance.
He's just good at business.
I read a biography of him.
And am amazed at his achievements.
He didn't come from a poor background. Quite the reverse. But he was taught by his mother how to make money. She gave him little projects.
Anyway he is a huge Philanthropist. Not just businessman.
And one amazing incidents. Or really one of the good things he's done. That he doesn't like to be talked about. Is his Iraq war rescue.
....this is what happened.
When Richard Branson was 40. In 1990. It was the time of the Invasion Of Kuwait. By Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussain.
For a start..Richard Branson was requested by King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan. To try and rescue 150,000 refugees that had fled Iraq. And were in really bad dangerous conditions in Jordan in the Winter. In camps.
With the help of Unicef, the Red Cross, the UK's foreign Office and Sainburys. Branson had all the seats removed from a Virgin Atlantic plane. And filled it will 40,000 blankets.
And flew them to Amman.
With alot of food too. And medical supplies.
I believe Richard Branson travelled on that plane.
But even better. At the time....chaos had broken out with the invasion of Kuwait and Bagdad was also a chaotic war zone.
And even worse, all over the UK TV was the shocking news/situation of British Nationals and other foreigners who were working in the region. Or on holiday. When the war broke out. Currently being held hostage there.
....being held hostage by Saddam Hussain, in Bagdad.
The British government were unable to rescue these families and their kids. So Richard Branson was so moved by the situation...he flew to Amman to discuss it with King Hussein. Who was on very good terms with Iraq's, Saddam Hussein.
And through this meeting. Branson drafted a letter to Saddam Hussein.
To request the release of any unwell British people held hostage.
And will he accept medical supplies?
2 nights later Saddam Hussein agreed. And agreed to release the British women, children and sick hostages. Saddam Husein agreed on the Condition a British Prime Minister met him first to confirm it.
Richard Branson asked for British Prime Minister Ted Heath to go. And he did. He met Saddam Hussein in Bagdad. And the deal was struck.
So quite quickly, in Oct 1990, Richard Branson flew one of his Virgin Atlantic planes to Bagdad, with a volunteer crew for the rescue. He took doctors, nurses and a Virgin Cabin crew. And the hostages relatives.
On arrival Bagdad was a blacked out airport.
Lots of soldiers with machine guns. Quite scary apparently.
Also...The amount of British families waiting at that airport to be rescued ended up to be too many for the rescue. So Branson had to leave some behind. He had to leave some British soldiers.
To an uncertain future in a war zone.
Richard Branson is quoted as saying,, 'when we left Iraqi airspace everyone cheered'. The British familes arriving at a UK airport at 3am in the morning was big news in 1990. They arrived at Gatwick I think, the BBC video of it is still available.
I remember it as very moving.
Had they not been rescued. The British familes would have died in Bagdad.
And that's a fact.
In my view, the British Government owe Richard Branson the decency of saving Virgin Airlines in the UK too.
It's the least they could do.
But then again.
THEY always know something we don’t. A lot of THEM built bunkers, quit their jobs, & relocated. The timing is suspicious.

Virgin Australia isn't a government-owned asset and has never paid tax here. The govt was out of line in offering up public (taxpayer) funds to rescue this private, overly-indebted millstone in the first place. Especially since VA contributed to the loss of 55 other airlines that once operated in this beautiful country.
Branson had other options; eg. using his own money from his net worth of $4.2 BILLION for bailout, asking shareholders to stump up and/or selling his Necker Island. Alas but no. Branson would much rather bleed out-of-work taxpayers to prop up a white elephant so he wouldn't have to. Bye bye, Branson.

I tend to think Richard Branson's kindness gets him more trouble than it's worth sometimes.
He could have easily died along with the Virgin cabin crew, relatives of the hostages, nurses and a British Ambassador on that rescue flight to Bagdad in 1990.

He even started a charity when he was 17. How many people I ask does that at 17.

Another thing he used to do in the UK when he was young ...was put on big music festivals. But never turned a profit on them. For himself.
It helped alot of UK bands, singers get work and fame.
But Branson got nothing from it.
His life, despite what people are led to believe by the media..is one endless pathway of giving.
The British Government don't like him. Because controversially in the late 80's early 90's Branson reformed the British Airline industry.
British people were paying ridiculous fares for flights back then.
And he took on British Airways for exclusive flights to the U.S.
They tried every dirty trick to stop him.
It was disgusting.
But he got Virgin Airlines up in the air and going.
And in the UK from then on. Flights were far cheaper.
He sued British Airways later.
And won.
No he's been through hell in his life. Hes not a bad guy as claimed.

Nxivm hired Richard Branson's island Necker, for a Nxivm founding seminar event.
He rented out Necker for plenty of seminars. With orgs that had nothing to do with him.
Richard Branson unfortunately did not know who Nxivm were entirely.
The claimed letter/video has totally didrepresented Branson.
He wrote to them to accept their hiring his island for the seminar event.
He may have been there when they had it. But he doesn't live on Necker all the time.

I don't think as a manager of Boy George and owner of Virgin records I would have been quite so patient and polite with Boy George.
Given the ridiculous amount of money Boy George was causing Richard Branson to lose.
In very bad international performances where Boy George was completely high on stage. Ineffective booked recording dates where Boy George threw endless drug induced tantrums.
And walked out.
Boy Georges insults to important people.
Scenes in hotels.
And his basically singlehanded sabotage of his own music career.
And reputation.
And who was it that saved Boy George from years of this?
Richard Branson. And his wife.
If you recall they sheltered/hid him at their home from the huge Press interest....and got him what was then considered therapy for Herion Addiction.
It didn't work initally. Boy George relapsed several times.
But it was Richard Branson who owned the label that Boy George was initially signed. And signed to at that time. And who discovered him in a way.
Personally I would have dropped Boy George from my label had he wasted so much money. And been so rude and insulting about it at the same time.
But Richard Branson has never been all about the money.
And he worked tirelessly to get Boy George clean.
Giving him free reign to make his choices.
You can claim that Richard Branson did this because Boy George was his product.
But that argument doesn't stand up.
And record labels will end your contract far sooner. If you are deliberately sagotaging your career.
At least if they can legally do it.
Richard Branson did not go down this route.
No one is entirely evil.
I refuse to put Sir Richard Branson on a pedestal.
As for him not knowing who or what NVXIM is, I’m not buying it. He was associated with the group that became NVXIM. So he had to know.
