If I remember correctly, Darwin was trying to discuss changes at the genetic level that take place over ling periods of time.
When I was in college, my Physical Geography professor said woodpeckers evolved because a bird hit its beak on a tree and that over time that bird’s offspring, their offspring, etc. would do the same, develop stronger beaks and become the woodpeckers we have today.
This highly educated professor with a doctorate degree could not explain why the bird didn’t die from injuries after banging its head & beak against a tree. 🤔
