The $1 fee will give new users the ability to post, reply, and quote, according to Fortune.com. New users who don’t pay the fee will be on “read only” status.
The $1 annual charge is only for new users, and does not apply to existing users. The plan is also different from X Premium, which offers verification badges and other perks for $8 a month.
