FAIRIES
The Ones Who Make All the Real Majick Happen…
Not,the Tooth Fairy.
Or the, Christmas Tree one.
Not even the one who lives at the bottom of the garden…
Nor the, 🧚 WEHO 🌈 Ones either…
NoE
I mean THE FAIRIES.
The OLD ones.
The Strange ones.
The ones your grandmother perhaps half-believed in but wouldn’t admit to believing in because respectable adults weren’t supposed to believe in such things.
The ones our Ancestors left bowls of milk for.
The ones farmers once thought twice about offending.
The ones who inhabited forests before we decided forests would be much more useful chopped into pieces and converted into tasteful kitchen cabinets.
The ones who lived beside springs before we put the water into plastic bottles and charged $4.95 for it.
The ones who danced beneath moonlight before we installed streetlights, CCTV cameras and signs informing everyone:
NO LOITERING.
The ones who made all the real Majick happen.
Always have.
Perhaps…
Always will.
All you have to do is believe.
Oh…
Behave.
Which is where humanity may encounter a slight administrative problem.
Because believing is one thing.
Behaving?
Have you met us?
⸻
ONCE UPON A TIME…
There was a time when nobody needed to ask whether Fairies existed.
What a peculiar idea that would have been.
You might as well have asked whether rain existed.
Or thunder.
Or, bad-tempered relatives.
They simply Were.
They inhabited the margins.
The Forest.
The Mountain.
The Stream.
The Lonely Road.
The Old Tree.
The Strange Hill, nobody ploughed.
The Places, between one Thing and Another.
Between, Daylight and Darkness.
Between, Waking and Sleeping.
Between, this World…and Whatever
might be standing immediately behind it.
Our Ancestors inhabited a Universe filled with life.
Not merely Biological life.
Presence.
The Wind had Character.
The River had Moods.
The Forest Watched.
Mountains Remembered.
Storms became Angry.
The Moon influenced Madness, Fertility, Tides, Dreams.
Certain places possessed something Humans have spent the last few centuries trying desperately to explain away.
An Atmosphere.
A Feeling.
A Warning.
A Welcome.
A Whisper.
Walk into an Ancient Forest, alone and tell me you have never felt it.
That Peculiar Sensation, that you are not entirely alone.
Science will undoubtedly have seventeen perfectly sensible explanations. Involving Evolutionary Psychology, Pattern Recognition and Peripheral Vision.
Excellent.
Very clever.
Put them in a folder.
But the feeling remains.
Something is there.
Perhaps, not something with wings.
Perhaps not something three inches tall , wearing a Buttercup as a hat.
That particular image, owes rather more to Victorian illustrators than Ancient Tradition.
The Original Fairy ,was considerably less likely to sit prettily upon a mushroom.
Considerably more likely to make you regret trespassing.
⸻
WE MADE THEM CUTE
Human beings have an Extraordinary habit.
Whenever something frightens us, we eventually put it on a Tea Towel.
Dragons.
Witches.
Ghosts.
Fairies.
All Domesticated.
Sanitised.
Merchandised.
We took Mysterious Beings associated with Wild Places, Death, Birth, Fate,
Weather, Harvests, the Unseen World…
Gave them Glitter.
Lots and Lots of Glitter.
We gave them Tiny wWngs.
Pink Dresses.
Little Shoes.
Magic Wands.
Then we put them into Children’s Bedrooms.
Very Convenient.
Because once something becomes Children’s Mythology.
Adults are relieved of the uncomfortable obligation of taking it seriously.
“Fairies aren’t real, darling.”
Really?
How certain are YOU?
Not whether tiny women called “Tinker Bell” are Hovering beside the begonias.
I will concede that evidence ,remains disappointingly thin on that particular matter.
But what if the Ancient idea represented something else?
What if “Fairy” was simply one Culture’s Word.
For an Intelligence Existing Outside Normal Human Perception?
Now things become rather more Interesting.
Considerably Less Comfortable.
⸻
THEY ARE EVERYWHERE
Change the Country.
Change the Century.
Change the Language.
Something Remarkably Similar Keeps Appearing.
Ireland has its Traditions of the “Aos Sí” .
Beings associated with Ancient Mounds & another Realm.
Scotland has stories of the “Sìth”.
Wales gives us the “Tylwyth Teg”, the Fair Family.
Cornish traditions speak of “Piskies”.
Northern England has “Boggarts, Brownies, & countless Local Spirits.
Scandinavia has “Elves” & Hidden Folk.
Iceland retains Traditions surrounding the “Huldufólk”, the Hidden People.
Germanic traditions teem with ”ELVES, ”KOBOLDS“ & Household Spirits.
Slavic Folklore contains beings associated with homes, forests, fields and water.
Japan has an enormous tradition of Spirits inhabiting landscapes and objects.
Across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania we find Traditions describing Non-Human presences associated with Particular Paces.
They are certainly not all “Fairies.”
That would be Cultural Vandalism dressed in Wings.
Their Stories, Meanings and Traditions differ enormously.
But beneath them sits one fascinating recurring human idea:
We are not alone here.
Not Aliens.
Not necessarily Gods.
Something else.
Something nearby.
Something inhabiting the same world…
Differently.
Perhaps the strangest question isn’t why our Ancestors believed that.
Perhaps the stranger question is:
Why did we stop?
⸻
BECAUSE WE BECAME TERRIBLY CLEVER
At some point humanity discovered something Extraordinarily Dangerous.
Not Gunpowder.
Not Nuclear Fission.
Not Reality Television.
We Discovered Certainty.
We decided that anything we couldn’t measure probably didn’t exist.
This was enormously useful.
It gave us Medicine.
Engineering.
Astronomy.
Electricity.
Computers.
Space Travel.
Antibiotics.
Heart surgery.
Machines capable of showing us videos of cats at three in the morning.
Civilization had peaked.
Science transformed Humanity,
because it demanded evidence rather than Assumption.
Thank Heavens it did.
But somewhere along the road,
some of us made a Curious Philosophical Leap:
“We cannot currently detect it”
Became
“It Cannot Exist.”
Those ARE not the same Statement.
History should have taught us that by now.
Humans once had no Concept of Bacteria.
Didn’t stop Bacteria.
We Couldn’t SEE Radio Waves.
They were Still There.
We Couldn’t Detect Distant Galaxies.
They didn’t Politely, wait for the Telescope to be Invented before Existing.
The Universe does not require our Intellectual Permission.
Which I Suspect Annoys Us Enormously.
We Like Being in Charge.
⸻
PERHAPS THE FAIRIES NEVER LEFT
Perhaps We Did.
Imagine an Old Woodland.
For Thousands of years Humans enter carefully.
They gather Fallen Wood.
Take Berries.
Hunt Occasionally.
Drink from Streams.
They know the Forest provides life, they also know the Forest can Kill them.
So they Respect it.
Stories develop.
Don’t Cut that Tree.
Don’t Disturb that Mound.
Don’t Foul that spring.
Don’t Hunt more than you Need.
Don’t Enter certain places after Dark.
Leave something behind when you take something.
Modern people might dismiss these as Superstition.
But look beneath the Mythology.
What do many of these rules accomplish?
Conservation.
Respect.
Restraint.
Boundaries.
The Sacred becomes an Early Environmental Protection System.
Tell someone:
“Don’t Destroy that grove because its Ecosystem has Significant Biodiversity.”
Our Ancestors might Stare Blankly.
Tell them:
“Don’t Cut those Trees because the Spirits will be Furious.”
Suddenly Everybody puts the Axe Down.
Effective.
No Committee meeting Required.
Perhaps our Ancestors were NOT Stupid.
Perhaps stories were SIMPLY the language available to them.
⸻
THEN WE ARRIVED WITH A BULLDOZER
Imagine being a Fairy.
You have lived peacefully beside an Ancient Oak for Nine Hundred Years.
Lovely Neighborhood.
Quiet.
Good Moonlight.
Reasonable Owl Population.
Then one Tuesday Morning:
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
A reversing Excavator appears.
Three men in Fluorescent Jackets Jump Out.
Someone has Planning Permission.
By Lunchtime your Sacred Grove is a Future Parking Structure.
You would be Annoyed Too.
Perhaps this Explains Quite a Lot.
Humanity has behaved toward the Natural World,
like the worst Airbnb guest Imaginable.
We Arrived.
Used Everything.
Broke Half of It.
Left Rubbish Everywhere.
Set Several Things On FIRE.
Now we’re Surprised the Host may NOT give us Five Stars.
We Poisoned Rivers.
Levelled Forests.
Filled Oceans with Plastic.
Pumped Chemicals into Soil.
Drove Species into Extinction.
Then Invented Scented Candles called:
WOODLAND SERENITY.
You Couldn’t Write It.
Well…
Apparently WE just did.
⸻
WHAT IF FAIRIES ARE NATURE’S CONSCIOUSNESS?
Now we’re entering Dangerous Territory.
My Favourite sort.
What if the Old Stories were attempts to describe the…
“Intelligence of Nature iItself?”
NOT Intelligence in the Human Sense.
Trees probably aren’t discussing mortgage rates.
Lucky Things.
But Ecosystems Communicate.
Trees Exchange Chemical Signals.
Fungi Create Enormous Underground Networks.
Plants respond to Threats.
Animals detect Environmental Changes Long Before Humans Notice Them.
Forests Operate as Interdependent Communities.
Everything Communicates.
Everything Influences Everything Else.
The Modern Ecological picture is NOT of Isolated Organisms ,
but of Vast Networks of Relationships.
Our Ancestors didn’t have Microscopes or Molecular Biology.
What they had WAS observation.
They SAW the Forest Functioning Almost Like a Living Entity.
So perhaps THEY Personified its Invisible Workings.
Perhaps the FAIRY was the Face they GAVE to something they Sensed but couldn’t Describe.
The SPIRIT of Place.
The Intelligence of Relationship.
The Invisible Glue.
“Majick”
Not Magic as in pulling a “Rabbit from a hat.”
Majick as Transformation.
Seed into Tree.
Caterpillar into Butterfly.
Winter into Spring.
Two cells into a Human Being.
Starlight traveling, across Millions of Years before entering your Eye.
If that isn’t Majick, our Standards have become Ridiculous.
⸻
BUT WHAT IF THEY ARE ACTUALLY THERE?
There….
I said it.
Because why spoil all the fun by being sensible?
Suppose Fairies are Independent Entities.
Not Metaphor.
Not Ecological Symbolism.
Not Quaint Folklore.
REAL….
Then where are they?
Perhaps, beside us.
Perhaps, reality contains layers.
Human senses are extremely limited.
We SEE only a TINY portion, of the Electromagnetic Spectrum.
We HEAR only a Particular range of frequencies.
Dogs HEAR things we Don’t.
Birds Perceive things Differently.
Bees can SEE Ultraviolet patterns Invisible to Us.
Sharks Detect Electrical Fields.
Other Animals Navigate using Sensory Systems that would once have Sounded Supernatural.
So the World You experience isn’t “The World”.
It is the “TINY” Edited Version your Nervous System Permits YOU to experience.
Your Brain is Basically giving YOU the Economy Package.
Enough information to find food, avoid buses and remember where you left your spectacles.
Everything Else?
Filtered.
Which Creates a Delicious Possibility.
Could something Exist around us that
“Our Normal Senses simply Aren’t Designed To Perceive?
Certainly, in Principle.
Does that Prove FAIRIES Exist?
No!!!
Steady On.
We’re causing Mischief, not Committing Fraud.
But, it leaves the door Cracked Open.
Through Cracked Doors…
Strange Things, Have Always Wandered.
⸻
CHILDREN SEE THEM
Or Claim To.
Which Adults Dismiss because Children have Imaginations.
They Do!!!
Glorious Ones.
Before WE Systematically Train It Out of Them.
Children “TALK” to Invisible Companions.
“SEE” Faces in Trees.
Invent Worlds.
Treat Animals as Personalities.
“SPEAK” to Toys.
“ASK” Questions Adults Stopped Asking Decades Ago.
Why?
What If?
Who Says?
How do You Know?
The Four Most Dangerous Questions Ever Invented.
Then Education and Society Gradually Teach Them the Proper Adult Vocabulary:
Imppossible.
Ridiculous.
Grow Up.
Be Realistic.
Children once surrounded by Invisible Kingdoms
eventually become Adults staring at spreadsheets.
Progress.
Apparently.
Perhaps Imagination isn’t the Opposite of Intelligence.
Perhaps it is one of Intelligence’s Highest Forms.
Einstein certainly VImagination.
Artists Depend upon It.
Scientists need it to formulate Hypotheses.
Inventors need it to Conceive what doesn’t yet Exist.
Every Human Creation begins as something Invisible.
A Thought.
A Possibility.
A Picture inside Someone’s Head.
Then…
Somehow…
It Enters Matter.
Tell me again Imagination isn’t a Kind of Majick.
⸻
THE FAIRIES HAVE RULES
Traditional Fairies were rarely portrayed as Uncomplicated Little Sweethearts.
They could Reward Kindness.
They could Punish Arrogance.
They disliked Broken Promises.
They Respected Hospitality.
They could be Generous.
They could be Terrifying.
Above all, they expected Humans to understand something modern Humanity struggles desperately with:
You Are Not Entitled To Everything.
Not Every Forest Belongs to You.
Not Every Creature Exists for You.
Not Every Mountain Needs Conquering.
Not Every Silence Needs Filling.
Not Everything Mysterious Requires Ownership.
Some Things Should Simply Be Left Alone.
Imagine Introducing that Philosophy to Modern Commerce.
Half the Boardrooms on Earth would Spontaneously Combust.
⸻
YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE
Belief is a Strange Thing.
People HEAR the word and Immediately Assume Religion.
But Belief is Much Larger.
Every Human Life is Constructed from Beliefs.
You BELIEVE Tomorrow Will Arrive.
You BELIEVE the Chair will Support you.
You BELIEVE Money has Value.
You BELIEVE the Person driving toward you will remain,
on their side of the road.….
__________
Usually.
Civilization itself is a Gigantic Collaborative act of Belief.
A Banknote is Paper.
A Border is an Imaginary Line.
A Corporation is a Legal Concept.
A Nation is a Collective Story.
A Reputation Exists inside Other People’s Minds.
Yet these Invisible things Govern Billions of Lives.
Humans already Live inside Worlds Created by Belief.
We simply call our accepted Beliefs ”Reality” & everybody else’s “Superstition.”
Convenient Arrangement.
So, perhaps Believing in “FAIRIES”.
Isn’t about accepting a tiny winged woman living behind the Hydrangeas.
Perhaps it’s about Recovering, the ability to believe that Reality contains more than we currently understand.
That Mystery still Exists.
That Wonder isn’t Childish.
That NOT Knowing is NOT Stupidity.
That sometimes the Correct answer is:
“I DON’T KNOW.”
Three Words Remarkably Absent from much of Modern Civilization.
⸻
AS WELL AS BEHAVE
Now we arrive at the Difficult bit.
Because FAIRY Folklore repeatedly contains an Ethical warning.
Don’t be Greedy.
Don’t Boast.
Don’t Break your Word.
Don’t Mistreat Animals.
Don’t Disrespect the Land.
Don’t Steal.
Don’t Abuse Hospitality.
Don’t Take More Than You’re Given.
Don’t Mock What You Don’t Understand.
In Other Words:
“BEHAVE YOURSELF.”
Perhaps that is Why We’ve Stopped Seeing FAIRIES.
They’ve BLOCKED US …
Imagine the FAIRY Council Meeting.
“Humans?”
“No.”
“Still?”
“Absolutely Not.”
“Any Improvement?”
“They Invented Disposable Vapes.”
“Good Grief.”
“Another Century?”
“Make It Two.”
Motion Carried Unanimously.
⸻
PERHAPS MAJICK REQUIRES MANNERS
There’s a Thought.
What if the Universe responds differently when approached with Reverence rather than Entitlement?
Ancient People often asked permission before entering Sacred Places.
They Offered Thanks.
They Left Gifts.
They Acknowledged Forces Greater than Themselves.
Modern Humans arrive with a Drone.
We Photograph Everything.
Geotag It.
Upload It.
Monetise It.
Then Complain there’s No Mystery Left.
We Murdered Mystery Ourselves.
We put Fluorescent Lighting in its Bedroom.
Perhaps “MAJICK” needs Darkness.
Silence.
Patience.
Attention.
Respect.
Perhaps it occurs constantly and we simply walk past staring at our phones.
⸻
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ONE?
Most people will say No.
But ask the question differently.
Have you ever Experienced something in Nature you couldn’t quite Explain?
A Movement at the Edge of Vision?
A Sudden Feeling that a Place was Occupied?
An Inexplicable Change in Atmosphere?
A Strange Light?
A Sound with no Obvious Source?
A Moment when the Forest seemed Almost Conscious?
A Childhood Memory that Still Feels Utterly Real?
Millions of People would say Yes.
Does that Mean FAIRIES?
Not Necessarily.
Memory Misbehaves.
Perception misleads.
The Brain Completes Incomplete Information.
Animals move Unexpectedly.
Light plays Tricks.
There are Perfectly Ordinary Explanations for Extraordinary Experiences.
But perhaps we have become so Frightened of Appearing Foolish,
that we Dismiss Experiences before examining them.
Our Ancestors may have Believed too Easily.
Modern People occasionally make the Opposite Mistake.
We Disbelieve too Easily.
Wisdom might sit somewhere between the two.
Keep your Mind Open.
But don’t let your Brain Fall Out.
⸻
THE FAIRY AND THE ATOM
Here’s something Amusing.
Tell someone you Believe Invisible Beings surround us and they’ll raise an eyebrow.
Tell them Trillions of Invisible Particles are passing through their body and they’ll nod because Physics says so.
Tell them Trees Communicate, 30 years ago they’d Laugh.
Now Scientists study chemical signaling & Mycorrhizal Relationships.
Tell them Animals can Detect Earthquakes or Magnetic Fields. Once it sounded Mystical.
Then research catches up.
Again and again Humanity discovers that reality is stranger than common sense expected.
Which doesn’t Validate every Supernatural Claim.
But it should Teach Us, Humility.
We Know A Lot.
We Don’t Know Everything.
Not Remotely.
The Universe contains Billions Upon Billions of Galaxies.
We Inhabit ONE Planet Circling ONE Fairly Ordinary STAR.
Our Species has Existed for the Cosmic Equivalent of 5 minutes.
Yet every generation produces people announcing confidently:
“We know what’s possible.”
Bless them.
The FAIRIES must Laugh themselves Senseless.
⸻
WHAT WOULD FAIRIES THINK OF US?
Imagine they have been Watching.
Not, for Decades.
For, Millennia.
They Watched us Discover Fire.
Agriculture.
Writing.
Cities.
Mathematics.
Medicine.
Music.
Art.
They Watched us build Cathedrals.
Paint Ceilings.
Compose Symphonies.
Cross Oceans.
Cure Diseases.
Walk on the Moon.
Probably thought:
“They’re Getting There.”
Then We Invented Nuclear Weapons.
“OH!!!”
Plastic Oceans.
“Oh DEAR !!!.”
Social Media Influencers filming themselves Licking Supermarket Produce.
“Meeting. NOW.”
Because Humanity contains this Extraordinary Contradiction.
We are capable of almost Unimaginable Beauty.
Breathtaking Stupidity.
Sometimes before Lunch.
We Rescue Injured Animals.
Then Destroy Their Habitats.
We Write Poetry about Nature.
Then Pave It.
We Photograph Sunsets while pumping Carbon into the Atmosphere.
We spend Fortunes searching space for Intelligent life while struggling to recognize Intelligence in Species sharing the Planet with Us.
FAIRIES, if you’re Listening:
WE CAN EXPLAIN …
Actually…
No.
We Probably Can’t.
⸻
MAYBE THEY HAVEN’T GIVEN UP
Perhaps that’s the Hopeful Part.
Spring Still Comes.
Seeds Still Germinate through Cracks in Concrete.
Forests Reclaim Abandoned Buildings.
Birds Return.
Whales Sing.
Mushrooms Rise Overnight.
Flowers Appear After Fire.
Nature Possesses An Astonishing Determination to Continue.
Maybe that is FAIRY Majick.
The Insistence of Life.
You Cut it Down.
It Grows.
You Cover It.
It Cracks Through.
You Poison it.
Somehow, Somewhere, Something Adapts.
Life Keeps Whispering:
NOT FINISHED YET !!!
Neither, Perhaps, Are We .
⸻
THE LAST FAIRY
Imagine One Remains.
JUST ONE.
Sitting beneath the Final Ancient Tree.
Her Wings Aren’t Glittery.
She’s Old.
Older than Our Religions.
Older than Our Nations.
Older perhaps Than the Stories Humanity Tells about Itself.
She Remembers when the Rivers Ran Clean.
When Stars Filled the Night.
When Humans Walked Quietly because Darkness Actually meant Darkness.
She has Watched Us Grow.
She has Watched Us Fail.
She has Watched Us Try Again.
She has Every Reason to Despise Us.
Yet She Doesn’t.
Because Occasionally…
A Child Rescues a Bee from a Swimming Pool.
Someone plants a tree whose shade they will never live long enough to enjoy.
A Stranger Feeds an Abandoned Animal.
A Community Protects a Woodland.
Someone Stops beside a Flower and Simply Looks.
Someone Chooses Kindness when Cruelty would have been Easier.
Someone Whispers Thank You to Something that Cannot Answer.
The Old FAIRY Smiles.
Because Perhaps there is Hope for the Ridiculous Creatures After All.
⸻
SO, DO FAIRIES EXIST?
I Haven’t the Foggiest.
Neither , iI We’re Being Truthful, Do You.
That’s the Beauty of It.
Perhaps they’re Folklore.
Perhaps they’re Archetypes.
Perhaps they’re Memories of Ancient Beliefs.
Perhaps they’re Personifications of Nature.
Perhaps they’re Psychological Projections.
Perhaps they’re Beings Existing Beyond Ordinary Perception.
Perhaps they’re, Iinterdimensional Travellers with an Inexplicable Fondness for Mushrooms.
Perhaps they’re All of Those Things.
Perhaps None.
But here’s What I Do Know.
A World in Which We leave room for Wonder is Richer, than ,
One in which Everything Unexplained is Immediately Ridiculed.
A World in Which Forests are Sacred Tends to Keep More Forests.
A World in Which Rivers Possess Spirits Tends to Think Twice Before Poisoning them.
A world in Which Children Believe there may be FAIRIES beneath Old Trees might Produce Adults who Hesitate before Cutting those Trees Down.
Frankly…
I’ll Take it.
Because Maybe the Important Question Was Never:
“Are FAIRIES Real?”
Maybe It Is:
“What Happens to Us when We Stop Believing Anything Could Be?”
When Wonder Disappears…
What Replaces It?
Consumption?
Certainty?
Cynicism?
Noise?
Perhaps Humanity doesn’t need Proof of FAIRIES.
Perhaps Humanity needs what the Fairy represents.
Mystery.
Respect.
Humility.
Imagination.
Nature.
Playfulness.
Wonder.
The possibility that We are NOT the most Important thing in Creation.
That last One might take some Work.
⸻
So Tonight…
If You Happen to Walk past An Old Tree…
Don’t Look Too Hard.
That’s Terribly human.
Don’t Demand evidence.
Don’t Shove a camera into the Bushes.
Don’t Ask for Identification.
Just Stop.
Be quiet.
Listen.
Leave the World unexplained for Sixty seconds.
Perhaps…
Just Perhaps…
Somewhere between the Wind moving through the Leaves the Silence Underneath it…
You might notice Something.
Not Necessarily Wings.
Not Bells.
Not Glitter.
Something much Older.
A Presence.
A Memory.
A little piece of the World we forgot how to see.
should something tiny dart behind the tree…
For heaven’s sake don’t chase it.
Don’t photograph it.
Don’t put it on TikTok.
Just smile.
Nod politely.
Keep Walking.
Because the Old Stories agree about one thing:
Fairies Appreciate Good Manners.
After everything Humanity has done to their Garden…
We should probably be on our
VERY BEST BEHAVIOUR…
After all…
They made the Real “Majick” Happen.
Always Have.
Always Will.
All You Have to Do…
is
BELIEVE.
Apparently…
&
BEHAVE.

Comments
I am rarely outside
and listening to nature
it has something to tell
I find stillness within me
connected with intuition
vivid, imaginative and free
imagine - you go outside
connect with nature
and its wondrous beings
you feel light touches
hear soft sounds
see the play of light
there is so much peace
and harmony within you
and around you ✨
